Safe Housing for Vulnerable Families

The Safe Housing program provides secure, decent shelter to the most vulnerable families. Many households live in substandard huts with thatched or rusted tin roofs, earth floors, and walls cannot withstand heavy rains. Unsafe homes contribute to illness and insecurity, so the Foundation works with local partners to upgrade or build houses for those in greatest need.

First, the program identifies beneficiary families: typically widows, orphans, households of persons with disabilities, or elderly with no support. Local chiefs and community committees help select families fairly. Once a family is chosen, the Foundation mobilizes volunteers and materials. Construction is done using simple, locally appropriate designs. For example, the Foundation may replace a leaking thatch roof with corrugated iron sheets, plaster walls with cement, and replace earthen floors with smooth concrete.

Materials are often sourced locally or donated: timber, iron sheets, windows, and doors are provided, while the family and other villagers contribute labor. The Foundation may also help install a latrine, helping to improve health and privacy. Before and after building, the program includes education on home maintenance and hygiene, to ensure the improvements last.

These upgrades have immediate benefits: a solid roof and walls protect children from rain, reduce respiratory illnesses, and offer security against pests. Safe housing also gives families a stable base from which children can study and parents can plan for the future. By addressing housing needs at the grassroots level, the Foundation helps break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
