Civic Education and Good Governance
The Civic Education and Good Governance program empowers residents of Webuye West to participate actively in community decision-making and democratic processes. The Foundation conducts ongoing civic awareness campaigns to inform citizens – especially youth and women – about their rights and responsibilities under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
Key activities include organizing community forums and workshops on topics such as the importance of voter registration, the structure of local government, and how development projects are funded by county or national government, the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), and how citizens can give input on budgets.
Before the next general elections, we hope to step up voter education in public markets, churches, and public barazas to inform residents about the voter registration process and election dates. Special efforts will target first-time voters and persons with disabilities, ensuring polling stations are known and accessible. This reflects the recognized role of civil society in boosting voter turnout and awareness.
The program also encourages transparency and accountability in local governance. In some areas, education is held on asking effective questions in public meetings or submitting petitions to local leaders. These activities build a culture where community members feel entitled to information and can hold elected officials accountable.
By improving civic knowledge and engagement, the Foundation helps residents take an active role in shaping their communities. This grassroots civic education complements national efforts – for example, ensuring that every voter is informed as required by law – and ultimately promotes good governance and transparent public service at the local level.
